Quick answer

Chicken drumsticks usually take about 18 to 25 minutes at 400F in an air fryer, flipping halfway. Whole leg quarters (drumstick and thigh together) take longer, often 25 to 35 minutes. Check that the thickest part reaches at least 165F. Many cooks aim for around 175F or a bit higher for dark meat, which tends to be more tender.

Drumsticks or whole legs

“Chicken leg” can mean a drumstick or a whole leg quarter. Drumsticks are smaller and cook more evenly. Leg quarters are larger and need more time, and the basket may only hold two or three. Choose pieces of similar size so they finish together.

Ingredients

For 6 drumsticks:

  • 6 chicken drumsticks (or 2 to 3 leg quarters)
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Black pepper

Steps

  1. Pat the chicken completely dry with paper towels.
  2. Toss with oil and the seasonings until evenly coated.
  3. Preheat the air fryer to 400F for a few minutes.
  4. Arrange the pieces in a single layer without overlapping.
  5. Cook 10 to 12 minutes, flip with tongs, and cook another 8 to 12 minutes.
  6. Check the temperature near the thickest part, not touching bone.
  7. Rest 3 to 5 minutes before serving.

Doneness

Dark meat is safe at 165F, but near the bone it can look pink even when cooked, so use a thermometer instead of judging by colour. If the meat still feels tough or the juices are not clear, give it a few more minutes.

Can you stack chicken legs?

It is better not to. Hot air needs to circulate around each piece to crisp the skin. If your basket is small, cook in two batches, or lean a few drumsticks against the basket wall so air can still reach them. Add a few minutes to the second batch if the first one cooled down.

Frozen chicken legs

Cooking from frozen is possible but takes noticeably longer and gives less even results. Many people start at a lower temperature, around 360 to 380F, for a longer time, then raise the heat at the end for browning. Season partway through when the surface has thawed. Always confirm doneness with a thermometer, and thaw in the fridge when you can.

Air fryer or oven

PAA questions often ask whether to bake legs at 350 or 400F. In a conventional oven, 400F is a common choice for crisper skin, while 350F gives gentler cooking and takes longer. An air fryer circulates heat faster, so it usually finishes sooner than an oven and crisps skin with less oil. Both work; the air fryer is handy for small batches.

Is air frying healthier?

Air frying generally uses much less oil than deep frying, so it can reduce the fat added to food. Chicken skin still contains fat, and your overall diet matters more than the cooking method. If you have specific dietary concerns, a doctor or dietitian can give personal advice.

Storage and serving

Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container within two hours and eat within three to four days. Reheat in the air fryer at about 350F until hot throughout. Serve with sweet potatoes or hash browns. For a boneless option, see chicken thighs. For a softer, fall-off-the-bone result, try slow cooker chicken drumsticks.
